What is the difference between brand name and compounded GLP-1 medications?

Brand name GLP-1 medications—such as Ozempic, Wegovy (semaglutide), and Zepbound (tirzepatide)—are FDA-approved drugs manufactured under strict quality, safety, and consistency standards. These medications are approved for type 2 diabetes and/or chronic weight management, depending on the product.

Compounded GLP-1 medications are custom-made versions of these drugs, prepared by licensed compounding pharmacies. They may include different concentrations, volumes, or added ingredients (like vitamin B12). These medications are not FDA-approved, even though they may use the same active ingredient.
